Summer Assignment

1) You will be watching a video and answering questions. Links to Video and Questions are below.

2) You will need to get a composition style book which will serve as your Scrapes (scrapbook of APES articles).

       - Journal Format: Each student will be responsible for purchasing a composition notebook, to serve as your scrAPES notebook.  For each article print an article analysis sheet and fill it out. You will staple this sideways in the composition book (and fold it) after the summary and analysis.

The written part in the composition book will be organized in the following way:

  1. Title Page

  2. Directions (yes the page you are reading)

  3. Table of Contents (must list title, source, date and page number in the journal. Leave 3 pages for this. You will add articles throughout the year.

  4. Each written summary/analysis followed by the article. All pages of the journal must be numbered in the lower right hand corner. It must be legible and in blue or black ink or typed.

-Article analysis: Include all of the following components and clearly identify each component - Following the title, label as (b) Summary, (c) Analysis, etc. Here's the list: a) Title, use the complete MLA format for each article you use and follow all punctuation rules b) Summary: Give a brief summary of the article c) Analysis: label each of the following points in your analysis 1) Does the article give two different points of view: yes or no and if yes, what are they? 2. Bias: The order in which information is presented and the amount of text devoted to influencing a reader's opinion is called bias. Is the article biased, and if so, which way is the article biased (or slanted)? In your opinion does the author give a positive, negative or neutral view of the environmental science topic? Explain. 3) Controversy: Is there any controversy surrounding this article? If so, briefly state it. 4. Your Perspective: State your perspective on this article based on your personal knowledge of the topic and your reading of this article. (This will become easier over the course of the class as you learn more.) 5. Affect on You: How does this topic affect you, or how does it relate to your life? Any articles or typed work can be stapled into the composition notebook sideways and folded.

The articles for the summer Scrapes assignments are listed below. They are all from the Encyclopedia of Earth (not any more - read below). Click on the underlined word in the title of each topic to access the article. These articles cover some of the topics that you will be covering this school year. Follow the directions above.

If you want to see some sample scrAPES books I have some in room 104 at Grant. Come over and see them. I am there for summer school and many other days with the Academic Decathlon team. Just email me.

Do the Math packet on the answer sheet. Show your work. Google videos on any topic that you struggle on to help you do the problems.

Watch Home by Yann Arthus Bertrand (if for some reason the link does not work simply google - Home by Yann Arthus Bertrand)

          Answer Home Questions

The Encyclopedia of Earth is now becoming a fee-for-use site. So I will be finding new related articles and posting them. Stay turned.

Encyclopedia of Earth (no longer viable website)

Articles - So look at the updated articles first

                   Overgrazing (updated article)

                   Habitat Fragmentation (updated article)

                  Climate Change (updated article)

Coral Bleaching (updated article) Make sure that you read the chart too so that you understand what is causing coral bleaching.

Ecosystem Services (updated article) This isn't really an article so it will be hard to analyze so make a list of the services instead

                 Water Pollution (updated article)

Ecosystems (updated article- not really an article thought_

Food Security - The global seed bank (updated article) Watch the video too

Wind Turbine Bird Mortality (updated article)

                 DDT (updated article)

You are encouraged as you read to look up any vocabulary that you are unfamiliar with as this may be the only way that you will truly understand a passage of reading or the issues being discussed.

So, in summary, you must get a composition book and do a summary and analysis of the 10 articles as outlined above. You must watch the video Home and answer the questions and you must do the entire math packet. All of this must be done before the first day of the Fall semester 2018.
